Public Arts Assessment: Sawyer Point

In November, sculpture conservator Thomas Podnar of McKay Lodge Fine Arts Conservation Laboratory conducted a three-day assessment of the condition of five major public artworks at CRC’s Waterfront facility. Art works include Cincinnatus (Karkadoulias), Law and Society (von Sartory), Westward (von Schlegell), Whistle Grove (Janney), and the iconic Cincinnati Gateway (Leicester) with its winged pigs atop steamboat stacks.
Podnar also provided a tour of the artworks that included a discussion of his findings and general recommendations for conservation and ongoing maintenance. Eighteen representatives from City Council, CRC, the CRC Public Art Committee, various City departments, and funder and donor groups participated in the tour. The conservator’s report will include written and photographic documentation of the current condition of each artwork, identification of causes of deterioration, and recommended plans of action.
Project funding is from the Cincinnati Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the Bicentennial Commons fund overseen by the Board of Visitors, and the Cincinnatus Association. (Pictured above: Tom Podnar (left) points out deterioration to masonry and bronze elements of Cincinnati Gateway as CRC’s Finley Jones looks on.)
