CRC Commissions
New Public Artwork

CRC
The new Otto Armleder Memorial Regional Aquatic Center at the Dunham Recreation Complex in West Price Hill will be the site of a public art “first” for CRC. A functional work of art created expressly for the site by Cincinnati artists Claire Darley and Rebecca Seeman will be CRC’s first commissioned public artwork.
The other artworks in CRC’s collection of 30 public artworks have been donated to the department. Ms. Darley and Ms. Seeman, who are Art Academy of Cincinnati faculty members, are creating infill elements that will be incorporated into the railing that separates the concession area from the rest of the aquatic facility. The intent of the design, say the artists, “is to establish the concession area as a cooler, refreshing ‘oasis’ apart from the intense sun and colors of the main pool area, water play apparatus and the aquatic center site.” The design concept (illustrated here in a model of a single infill panel) uses imagery of simplified plant forms common to the edges of ponds and streams. The design concept was approved at the Recreation Commission’s February meeting and presented to the Price Hill Civic Club in March. “The Commissioners were very impressed with the concept drawings and models the artists presented and with the thoughtful process the artists are using to create the artwork,” said Recreation Commission President Denise Driehaus. “The artwork will be a wonderful addition to the aquatic center and will set the stage for including public art in future capital projects.”

The artist selection committee included CRC Public Art Committee (CPAC) co-chair Kate Kern, CPAC member Stephen Bonadies, community member Pat Bruns, and Dunham representative Lois Finnell. CRC staff coordination for the public art project is provided by Carolyn Gutjahr (public art project) and Jeff Koopman (capital project).

The regional aquatic center project and its public art component are funded by a grant from the Otto Armleder Trust. The aquatic center project will be completed in summer 2007.

Poetry and Pottery Party &
Fine Arts Fundraiser

Unique challenges, awards, raffle items, great food, and poetry, the Pottery & Poetry Party has it all!
February 28th was the 5th year for this annual event. The Pottery Party began at the Dunham Arts Building as a fundraiser for the Fine Arts Fund.  This event continues to grow in popularity, challenging potters and poets alike in unique events. To participate in this event potters and spectators donate money to the Fine Arts Fund. Teams of potters are formed and compete in unorthodox events such as throwing on the wheel blindfolded, team relays and throwing with oven mitts.  Each event is timed and judged on established criteria.  Based on the success of the first year, the party was held again, adding poetry into the mix of events. Writers create impromptu poetry based on words and phrases spoken during the challenges.  Poetry has now become an established element in this mix of artistic skills.  This event has become a venue for potters of all skill levels to meet, socialize and showcase their skills in a very unique way.  The Pottery & Poetry Party has evolved into a first class event, raising over $1500 for the Fine Arts Fund.
