Artist-In-Residence Program July 10 - Aug. 4, 2006

Dayton artist Jean Howat Berry, an Ohio Arts Council Arts Learning Program Residency artist, was a theatre artist in residence with the Cincinnati Recreation Commission (CRC) for four weeks in July and August 2006. Howat Berry, 13 eight- to twelve-year-olds from the East and West Price Hill neighborhoods, and two teen peer leaders met four mornings a week at St. William Church in West Price Hill to make masks, learn individual and ensemble acting skills, and develop a short dramatic presentation that reflected issues in their communities. In addition, the artist conducted mask-making and theatre workshops with children, seniors, and CRC staff from across Cincinnati at five CRC community centers. The program ended with a theatre presentation and an exhibition of masks at St. William Church.

East Side Senior Christmas Party

The CRC East Side Seniors Holiday Luncheon was held on December 13, 2006 at Madisonville Recreation Center. Seniors from Bush, Evanston, Kennedy Heights, Leonard Shore, Madisonville and Oakley gathered together to share the Holiday Spirit of Friendship. Madisonville Recreation Center was decorated with all the trimmings. The goal of the day was to meet new friends since each table had representation from each center. They sang, shared stories and enjoyed a wonderful supper lunch. The group was entertained with the fantastic voices of the Madisonville Gospel Singers. And to everyone's delight Santa arrived just in time to pick numbers for the door prizes and of course a few had to sit on Santa's lap. A good time was had by all and next year will be bigger and better!

The Cincinnati Recreation Commission's Outdoor Adventure Committee and Morgan's Canoe Adventures in Learning Program have joined forces to deliver the natural experience of a lifetime for Cincinnati area teens. Up to 35 fortunate teens (12-16 years old) will be selected by lottery to join RiverTrek on an exploration of natural beauty, eco-science and just plain fun, as we paddle 60+ miles of the Little Miami River, in canoes and kayaks. The Riv RiverTrek 20 erTrek 2011 team will be traveling down the Little Miami River as a group of young men and women representing a broad range of Cincinnati's youth; from the central city to the suburbs.

Prior to RiverTrek, many of our teens have had little experience outside of their urban environments for any extended period of time. Some are unfamiliar with camping and others have various levels of experience canoeing and rafting on the river.

Some members of this year's group are returning paddlers of former RiverTrek teams. They have been selected to serve as Peer Leaders. They will help to guide and nurture those with less experience, to give back to the program and to continue their personal growth through RiverTrek RiverTrek.

The trip plan will include 5 days of travel by canoe and kayak. On Friday, we conclude our journey, traveling down the Ohio River to the Public Landing in downtown Cincinnati. Upon arrival, we will be greeted by family, friends and the press, as we complete our 5 day journey.

Along the way RiverTrekkers will paddle, camp, swim and hike, as well as participate in team building activities and games while exploring this historic river. Our group will also stop to test and monitor the water quality and conduct macro-invertebrate sampling along the course of the river. We will examine wildlife along the Little Miami River, search for fossils, and make note of historic sites along

RiverTrek 2011 - Day 1

The 2011 RiverTrekkers left the McKie Recreation Center on Monday July 25th and headed to Morgan's Canoe Livery.

The RiverTrek journey begins this morning when we put in our canoes north of the livery, on the Little Miami River just north of Oregonia, Ohio. For our first day on the river, we are planning to take it slowly to allow the group to acclimate to the conditions of the river and the peculiarities of travel by canoes in convoy. Along the way we pass historic Native American sites like Caesar's Creek and Fort Ancient. Dinner is provided by Morgan's Canoe and Outdoor Center. We cover 12 miles this day and make camp at Morgan's Riverside Campground.

DAY TWO (Tuesday, July 26, 2011): The second day begins with a campfire breakfast provided by Morgan's Canoe and Outdoor Center. After we break camp, we paddle our canoes 16 miles to the Loveland Castle where we will come ashore for an overnight stay. DAY THREE (Wednesday, July 27, 2011): In the morning we enjoy breakfast at the campfire circle near the castle, overlooking the river. After we clean-up and stow the gear, we rejoin the river and travel about 16 miles by canoe. Along the way we will have opportunities to cool off as we snake our way downriver through some sections of shallow water. We arrive in late afternoon at the Lower Craig Campground operated by the Boy Scouts. Lower Craig has a secluded campsite, plentiful water and large open fields for sports and games.

DAY FIVE (Friday, July 29, 2011): Following a hearty breakfast, we will break camp, carefully packing up the equipment. We will participate in some final wrap-up activities, before embarking on the final leg of the journey to the mouth of the Little Miami on down the Ohio River to the Public Landing. We will arrive at the Public Landing between 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. for the conclusion of the journey where the RiverTrek team will be met by family and friends. Upon our arrival, we will assist in getting the boats out of the water loading them onto the trailer for transport back to Morgan's Canoe Livery. We will pause for some final words and a group picture, pick up our gear, say our goodbyes and head for home.

WKRC Ch.12 weatherman Tim Hedrick brought his weekly "Grillin' with Tim" segments to CRC's East End Leblond recreation center on Thursday August 18th.

A festive atmosphere delighted the approximately 100 people in attendance with food, music and games provided while Hedrick reported his weather forecast several times during the course of the evening.

A contingent of kids from CRC's Westwood Town Hall were on hand and enjoyed the food and fun.

2011 CRC Wet Field Day

On Saturday, August 27, 2011, The Cincinnati Recreation Commission & Cincinnati Recreation Foundation presented the Inaugural Wet Field Day at Queensgate Field.

The WET FIELD DAY was a fun, NEW event that finished up the summer with a splash! 10 teams of 4 competed for pride and prizes in a series of water games. The event was held to raise money to make sure city pools are opened and operating for years to come.

The Cincinnati Fire Division was on hand with a tanker and hoses for games and water supply, renowned " DJ Julie J" provided live music and Hoist provided re-hydrating beverages as well as prizes and promotional materials.

The Cincinnati Recreation Commission-NFL Flag Football Program sponsored by the Anthony Mu�oz Foundation offers well-organized, supervised fun for boys and girls ages 5 through 17. The program introduces youngsters to the great game of football and fosters the development of teamwork and physical fitness for everyone involved.

NFL flag football is a traditional non-contact flag football program. Boys and girls play on co-ed teams. All players are matched by age and ability. Skills taught include running, passing, and receiving. This program provides children the opportunity to participate in organized athletics and to be involved with the Bengals, while developing fundamental football skills.

McKie Recreation Center Renovations

The Cincinnati Recreation Commission's Mckie Recreation Center is in the process of undergoing extensive renovations. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in October.

McKie, which was dedicated in 1970, will see 2.4 million dollars in improvements that will update the facility from foundation to roof. Amongst the many improvements, the center will become ADA compliant with the addition of elevators and will get updated mechanical systems which will add air conditioning to the gymnasium.

The neighborhood of Northside will also benefit from additional renovations to the adjoining swimming pool. This is slated to take place in at the same time as the center construction and CRC officials are planning on the pool to be ready for the 2012 season.

UPDATE ON RENOVATION
Work continues on the McKie Recreation Center. The McKie Center will get a new interior design as well as a new elevator and windows. As part of the upgraded look, the McKie Family Aquatic Center will have a new sprayground, new pool decks and a new pool filtration system. Work is scheduled to be completed later this year.

2011 7 Hills Run

On Sunday December 4th, runners took part in the Cincinnati Recreation Commission's annual 7 Hills Run. The 2012 event marked the 34th year for the run.

The Seven Hills Run/Walk is a 12.4 mile annual event that challenges runners over the famously hilly terrain through the heart Cincinnati.

Runners tour the hills of Mt. Adams, Mt. Auburn, Clifton, Fairview, North and South Fairmount and finishing in scenic Price Hill! At various times, there are no sidewalks on the course, and the road precariously narrows in some places. Course volunteers are always on hand to ensure that everyone finishes safely, and course maps are available the day of the run.

On Tuesday evening, the CRC, who partnered with the Marvin Lewis Community Fund and Dick's Sporting Goods, brought 30 underprivileged kids to Dick's Sporting Goods on Montgomery Road in Cincinnati in limousines, provided by A Savannah Nite Limousine Services. Once they arrived, the kids were informed that they would each receive a $100 gift certificate to get things they wanted for Christmas. Girls on the Run 5K

On Saturday November 19th girls from Bush, LeBlond, Westwood Town Hall and Dunham Recreation Centers, participated in the Girls on the Run 5k race at Sawyer Point. For many of the participants it was their first time participating in a 3.1 mile race!

The race took place after the girls participated in a 10 week program that met twice a week. Girls on the Run is a program that "weaves training for a 5K run with fun, experience-based lessons that improve self-awareness, builds a collection of positive experiences and inspires life-changing confidence through accomplishment."

Each girl ran with a running buddy that helped encourage her the whole race and after completeing the 5k the girls got to keep the brand new pair of New Balance running shoes that they were fitted for from the Running Spot. The confidence and accomplishment that was across each girls' face as they crossed the finish line was priceless.

Flag Football National Tournament of Champions

For the second straight year a team made up of young men from our recreation centers won the Cincinnati Regional Flag Football Tournament for the ages of 12-14. The team was made up Torres Randolph (Hirsch Center), Marcus Williams, Markeice Brown, Jamya Williams (Lincoln), Jeff Wood, Evan Coleman, Jerry Hargrove, (Evanston), and Trevon Coleman (Madisonville).

With that victory they earned the right to compete in the National Tournament of Champions held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. For almost all these teens this was their first time on a plane and their first time to see an ocean. The trip for them was a blast and they took full advantage of the opportunities. On tournament day the team played well and as a team and finished as the 8th best team in the nation.

Girls Only Outing

On Saturday, February 11th, girls from Westwood Town Hall, LeBlond, Bush and Millvale Recreation Centers took a trip to the University of Cincinnati to see a UC Women's Basketball game. Each girl that attended received a pink adidas backpack.

The girls got to see Lucy the Bearcat from the Cincinnati Zoo. During the game, the girls sat right behind the Lady Bearcat players and two of the girls from Millvale were brought onto the court to "dress like a Bearcat" and then shot baskets until they made it. After the game, the girls were able to get their picture taken with the Bearcat mascot and they also received autographs from all of the UC players.

Southwest Ohio Senior Olympics

A great time was had by all at this year's Southwest Ohio Senior Olympics. They were held March 31 through May 19 and saw more than 550 participants competing in 60 events. Events included golf, swimming, tennis, track & field and many more specifically for athletes ages 50 and older.

RiverTrek 2012

Rivertrek is a journey of self discovery and growth that brings teens together from diverse backgrounds. RiverTrekkers learn camping, canoeing, kayaking, leadership and teamwork skills on this 65-mile trip along the Scenic Little Miami River.

Up to 50 teens travel the Little Miami River from just north of Oregonia for 60+ miles to Downtown Cincinnati's Public Landing. They explore the river through paddling, camping, swimming and hiking and participate in team building activities and games.

CRC has offered the RiverTrek experience to youth every year since 1997.

Fomer CRC Tennis Director Honored

Karen Montavon, former CRC employee was honored at the Madisonville Recreation Center for her tireless efforts to grow the Cincinnati tennis community. The honor came from American Express and the United States Tennis Association and was part of a ceremony on August 13 dedicating the Madisonville Center's newly refurbished courts.

Karen worked for the Cincinnati Recreation Commission for 28 years, retiring in 2007. During her tenure at CRC, she was the Tennis Director and the Director of the Cincinnati Chapter of National Junior & Tennis Learning (NJTL). Since her retirement, she has continued to be a true advocate to the NJTL program, bringing the game of tennis to kids throughout the Cincinnati area.

She currently serves as the president of the Ohio Valley Tennis Association and holds positions on the Cincinnati Recreation Commission, the National Junior Tennis League's Cincinnati Chapter, Tennis For Charity, Inc., the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Association and Cincinnati Sports Professional Network.

Karen, thank you for sharing your time and talents. You have helped thousands of youth and adults grow in the "sport of a lifetime."

Pleasant Ridge Aquatic Center

We are excited about the improvements to the Pleasant Ridge Aquatic Center. The $1.4 million renovation started in September of 2012 and is scheduled to be completed in May 2013. The aquatic center is scheduled to open May 25, 2013. The renovation includes relocating the entrance of the parking lot and adding additional lighting to the parking lots. The existing wading pool is being replaced with a new, zero-depth entry stainless steel wading pool. A sprayground is being added to the site. It will be open to the public and have separate operation hours than the pool. The new lap/dive pool will be equipped with two ADA accessible forms of entry. This renovation will also have new shade structures throughout the site to provide extra comfort on sunny days. After the renovations, the Pleasant Ridge Aquatic Center will be a more accessible, open concept site providing better comfort.
